Is Choosing Sobriety the Healthiest Thing You Can Drink To?

It’s Sober October a month when many people take a step back from alcohol to reflect on their relationship with it. But here’s a little secret from me, The Waterlady: I stopped drinking alcohol about six years ago, and it changed my life.

It wasn’t a grand, dramatic decision. I wasn’t trying to make a statement or join a movement. I just noticed that even a small drink—a glass of wine, a cocktail, or even a champagne toast made me really sick. My body told me in no uncertain terms that alcohol wasn’t for me anymore. The headaches, the fatigue, the sluggish mornings… the reward simply wasn’t worth the risk. So I stopped.

And honestly? I haven’t looked back.

From Craft Beer to Clean Hydration

My partner had his own journey. He used to be a craft beer enthusiast—someone who could tell you the hop profile of a small-batch IPA from three states away. But about three years ago, he too realized alcohol wasn’t serving him anymore. His health, his focus, his energy everything was better without it.

We didn’t quit drinking; we just changed what we drink.
Now, instead of opening a bottle of wine, we open bottles of natural spring waters from around the world. Each one tells a story: volcanic, glacial, artesian, or mineral-rich. Every sip offers something your body actually needs—like magnesium for stress, silica for skin health, or bicarbonates for balance.

When people see me with a beautiful glass bottle of sparkling water, they often assume it’s champagne. I always smile. It’s not champagne, but it feels just as special.

Sobriety Is About Addition, Not Subtraction

There’s a common misconception that sobriety always has to do with addiction or loss. But for many of us, it’s actually about addition adding clarity, energy, peace, and a stronger connection to ourselves. Choosing not to drink doesn’t mean we’re missing out. It means we’ve found something that fills us up instead of depleting us.

Some people cut back for health reasons. Some for focus. Some just because they want to feel better. That’s reason enough. You don’t have to have a rock-bottom moment to decide that alcohol isn’t right for you. Sometimes, it’s simply about realizing that your body deserves something purer—something that supports you rather than slows you down.

The Joy of the Glass

I love the ritual of drinking. Pouring something elegant into a glass, clinking it with a friend, savoring the moment—it’s not about the alcohol; it’s about the experience. That’s why I adore our naturally sparkling waters. They’re celebratory, sophisticated, and, frankly, luxurious.

A good mineral water has layers of taste—minerality, texture, effervescence—that can rival any fine wine or craft cocktail. Some are soft and delicate like a whisper (think Acqua Filette Still), while others sparkle like a toast (Vichy Catalan or Saint Géron, my personal favorite for its tiny champagne like bubbles).

These waters are more than beverages they’re moments. They help you be present, hydrated, and in tune with your body. They give you everything alcohol takes away.

A Toast to Sober October and Beyond

So, this month, whether you’re fully embracing Sober October or just thinking about cutting back, remember: you’re not giving something up—you’re gaining so much more.

You’re gaining mornings that feel fresh, energy that lasts all day, and skin that glows from within. You’re gaining a connection to your body and your mind that alcohol can blur. And if you want to celebrate? There’s always a water for that.

At Salacious Drinks, we believe hydration should be joyful, intentional, and a reflection of who you are. Every bottle on our site comes from a natural single source, untouched and unaltered—just as nature intended. Because when you stop numbing your body, you start listening to it. And that’s where true wellness begins.

So here’s to Sober October, and to the people who choose water—not because they have to, but because they want to.

Cheers to clarity, balance, and beautiful bottles that bring you back to yourself.
