Issue #394 What's the Connection Between UV Rays and Hydration?

July is officially UV Safety Month, which means it's time to break out the sunscreen, sunglasses, wide-brimmed hats... and maybe an extra bottle of water. Wait. Water?

While hydration won't replace sunscreen (sorry, there's no magical mineral water that gives SPF 50), drinking enough water plays a surprisingly important supporting role in helping your skin handle the challenges of summer. Let's dive into why UV Safety Month exists, what the sun actually does to our skin, and why staying hydrated deserves a spot in your summer skincare routine.

First Things First... What is UV Safety Month?

July is one of the sunniest and often hottest months across much of North America. Because people spend more time outdoors, organizations dedicate July to raising awareness about the effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation and encouraging habits that help reduce the risk of sun damage. UV rays are invisible rays from the sun that reach Earth's surface every day even on cloudy days. There are three types:

UVA Rays

Penetrate deep into the skin, Contribute to premature aging,  Responsible for many wrinkles and age spots.

UVB Rays

Cause sunburns, Damage the outer layers of skin, Play a major role in skin cancer development.

UVC Rays

Mostly absorbed by Earth's atmosphere, Fortunately, they never reach us naturally.

The takeaway? Your skin is working overtime every time you're outside.

Your Skin Loves Water More Than You Think

Your skin is your body's largest organ. It helps regulate body temperature, protects against bacteria, keeps moisture inside your body, and acts as a barrier against environmental damage. That barrier works best when your body is properly hydrated. When you're dehydrated, your skin may become:

Less elastic, Drier, More prone to irritation, Rougher in texture, Slower to recover from environmental stress

Hydration doesn't magically erase wrinkles or cure sunburns, but it supports the normal function of the skin barrier, which is essential for healthy-looking skin. Think of your skin like a sponge. A well-hydrated sponge is flexible and resilient. A dried-out sponge? Not so much.

Can Water Prevent Sunburn?

This is where science keeps us honest. No. Drinking water does not prevent sunburn. Only proper sun protection, such as sunscreen, protective clothing, shade, and limiting midday sun exposure—can reduce UV damage. However... When you're out in the heat, your body loses water through sweat. If dehydration sets in, your body has a harder time regulating temperature, and you may feel hotter, more fatigued, and recover more slowly after spending time outdoors. Hydration supports your body's natural cooling system, making those beach days and afternoon hikes much more enjoyable.

Sweat is Actually Pretty Amazing

Most people think sweat is just something to wipe away. It's actually one of your body's smartest cooling mechanisms. As sweat evaporates, it removes heat from your skin, helping maintain a safe body temperature. But sweat also means you're losing water. Sometimes a lot of it. On hot summer days, even light outdoor activities can lead to significant fluid loss before you realize you're thirsty. That's why it's better to hydrate consistently throughout the day instead of waiting until you feel dehydrated.

Does Mineral Water Offer Any Bonus Benefits?

Here's where things get interesting for water enthusiasts. Natural mineral waters don't simply provide hydration they also contain naturally occurring minerals collected as the water travels through underground rock formations. Depending on the source, those minerals may include:

  • Calcium

  • Magnesium

  • Potassium

  • Bicarbonate

  • Silica

Each natural source has its own unique mineral fingerprint. While no mineral water should be viewed as a skincare product, drinking natural mineral water can contribute to your overall fluid intake while providing naturally occurring minerals that are part of a balanced diet. For water lovers, summer is the perfect season to explore different waters from around the world. A crisp, lightly mineralized still water may feel incredibly refreshing after a walk in the sun, while a naturally sparkling mineral water can be a satisfying afternoon pick-me-up.

Your Summer Skin Survival Kit

Hydration is only one piece of healthy summer skin. Here's your complete toolkit:

☀️ Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen every day.

🧢 Wear hats and UV-blocking sunglasses.

🌳 Find shade between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when UV rays are strongest.

💧 Carry water wherever you go.

🍉 Eat water-rich fruits and vegetables like watermelon, strawberries, cucumbers, tomatoes, and oranges.

🚿 Take cool showers after long days in the sun to help cool your body.

🧴 Moisturize after sun exposure to help maintain your skin's moisture barrier.

Fun Hydration Challenge

This week, try creating your own Summer Hydration Station at home. Fill a pitcher with ice and add fresh slices of:

Lemon , Lime, Cucumber, Orange, Mint , Basil, Strawberries.

Pair it with a few chilled bottles of your favorite natural mineral waters and see how different mineral profiles complement the fresh flavors. It's an easy way to stay hydrated while discovering that water doesn't have to be boring.

The Bottom Line

UV Safety Month isn't just about avoiding sunburn it's about taking care of your body's largest organ. While hydration won't replace sunscreen or block harmful UV rays, it plays an important supporting role by helping your body regulate temperature, maintain healthy skin function, and replace fluids lost during hot summer adventures. So this July, remember the golden rule: Wear the sunscreen. Find the shade. Sip plenty of water. Your skin will thank you for it. After all, glowing summer skin isn't just about what you put on your body it's also about what you put in it. Whether you're relaxing by the pool, hiking a mountain trail, enjoying a picnic, or simply soaking up a beautiful summer afternoon, don't forget the simplest wellness habit of all:

Stay hydrated, stay protected, and enjoy the sunshine responsibly. ☀️💧
