Gerolsteiner begins as precipitation falling across the Volcanic Eifel, a dramatic region of western Germany shaped by ancient eruptions. The landscape is filled with volcanic craters, basalt deposits, mineral-rich rock and circular lakes known as maars. As water slowly travels underground, it filters through layers of volcanic rock and dolomite. Along the way, it naturally collects calcium, magnesium and bicarbonate. Carbon dioxide originating deep within the volcanic landscape also encounters the underground water, contributing to the source’s naturally carbonic character. This geological process gives Gerolsteiner Sparkling a total mineral content of approximately 2,479 milligrams per liter. In bottled-water language, that makes it a highly mineralized water and explains why it feels noticeably different from low-mineral spring waters. Think of it this way: a delicate, low-mineral water may whisper across the palate. What Is Inside the Bottle?

One liter of Gerolsteiner Sparkling contains approximately 348 milligrams of calcium and 108 milligrams of magnesium. It also contains an impressive 1,816 milligrams of bicarbonate per liter. A water’s mineral composition is determined by the underground rock layers through which it travels. Calcium is best known for its role in maintaining normal bones and teeth, while magnesium supports numerous normal functions in the body, including muscle and nerve function. These minerals must come from what we eat and drink because the body cannot produce them. The important detail here is that the minerals in natural mineral water are already dissolved. That makes water a convenient way to contribute to your overall mineral intake alongside a balanced diet. According to the brand, a liter of Gerolsteiner Sparkling supplies more than one-third of the commonly referenced 800-milligram daily calcium intake. Then there is bicarbonate. Although it does not have an established daily requirement like calcium or magnesium, bicarbonate helps explain both Gerolsteiner’s composition and its taste. It acts as a natural buffer and helps balance what could otherwise be a sharper mineral flavor. Gerolsteiner is not medicine, and it should not be presented as a cure for a medical condition. Why Doesn’t It Taste Salty?

With that much mineral content, you might expect Gerolsteiner to taste aggressively salty. Surprisingly, it does not. The secret is balance. Gerolsteiner contains substantial calcium, magnesium and bicarbonate but comparatively modest amounts of sodium and chloride. Those proportions help create a clean, slightly earthy and pleasantly mineral taste without turning the water briny. The carbonation brings everything forward. It gives the water a crisp opening, while the minerals create a rounded, almost structured finish. This is one reason Gerolsteiner works particularly well at the table. Try it with grilled vegetables, roasted meats, aged cheese, dark bread or a rich cream-based dish. The Gerolsteiner Fact You May Not Know

Here is the part of the story that surprised us: Gerolsteiner was discovered because a geologist was searching for natural carbon dioxide. During the 1880s, Wilhelm Castendyck explored the area and located the first Gerolsteiner mineral spring. He sent a sample to Professor Carl Remigius Fresenius, one of Germany’s leading chemists and the founder of the Fresenius Institute. The analysis confirmed that the water was naturally rich in both carbon dioxide and minerals. That discovery became the foundation of the company, officially established on January 1, 1888. The brand became international remarkably quickly. Gerolsteiner first shipped its water to the United States in 1890 only two years after the company was founded—and began exporting to Australia in 1895. Those are surprisingly early dates for a bottled water that many Americans consider a modern specialty import. Another fascinating detail: Gerolsteiner reports taking up to 300 water samples every day as part of its quality-control program. That is a serious amount of attention for something nature created long before the bottling line existed.  Gerolsteiner was originally filled into clay jugs rather than today’s familiar glass bottles.

A Bold Beginning to Wellness Month

Wellness does not have to mean chasing dramatic promises or turning every drink into a complicated supplement.
