Issue #434: Could Your Friday Night Ritual Use a Little French Sparkle?

Hello, water lovers!

October has arrived, and with it comes the annual parade of pumpkins, cozy sweaters, and people putting cinnamon into absolutely everything. But this month also brings an invitation to explore something different: Sober October.

Whether you’re taking a month away from alcohol, trying a few alcohol-free evenings, or already living that life like I am, there’s one question I think deserves more attention: What do you actually look forward to pouring?

Because Friday night deserves a little ceremony. The workweek ends. The shoes come off. Dinner starts smelling good. And the glass in your hand should feel like something you chose with enthusiasm.

My suggestion for this first October weekend? Give Saint-Géron a place in your evening ritual.

This naturally sparkling mineral water comes from Haute-Loire, France. Its bubbles are part of its natural source character, and the producer describes them as fine and delicate. That makes it an interesting bottle for anyone curious about the gentler side of sparkling water.

There’s something wonderful about opening a bottle whose story begins underground, pouring it into a beautiful glass, and giving yourself permission to enjoy the moment. No elaborate occasion required. Making it through Friday counts.

As a water sommelier, I encourage people to pay attention to texture as much as taste. Take a sip and ask yourself: Do the bubbles feel soft, lively, persistent, or fleeting? Does the water leave a mineral impression? How does it feel alongside food?

You don’t need a perfect answer. Your own experience is the point.

Saint-Géron gives you a chance to explore those questions without a complicated tasting setup. Start with the water alone, chilled to your liking, in a clean glass. Give it a few unhurried sips before introducing ice, fruit, or anything else.

Think of that first pour as meeting the water before inviting the entire garnish drawer into the conversation.

One thing I love about an evening drink is the ritual surrounding it. Choosing the glass. Opening the bottle. Sitting down instead of answering one more email while standing in the kitchen.

Those small choices can make an ordinary evening feel considered. And they’re available whether your plans involve a dinner party, a movie, or finally eating a meal while it’s still hot.

For this weekend, try serving Saint-Géron with an autumn-inspired plate. My pairing suggestions are roasted squash with herbs, a mushroom tart, or a few slices of cheese with crisp apple. Taste the food, take a sip, and notice whether you enjoy the combination.

Water pairing is personal. You’re allowed to have opinions. In fact, I insist.

If you’d like to take that Friday pour in a seasonal direction, here’s a simple mocktail idea: an Apple Orchard Sparkle. The goal is to leave room for the water while adding just enough apple and citrus to suggest autumn.

For one serving, gather:

  • 4 ounces chilled Saint-Géron sparkling mineral water
  • 1 ounce still apple cider, meaning apple juice rather than alcoholic hard cider
  • 1 teaspoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • A thin apple slice
  • A small rosemary sprig, optional
  • A few ice cubes, optional

Add the apple cider and lemon juice to your glass. If you’re using ice, add it now. Slowly pour in the Saint-Géron and give the drink one gentle stir. Finish with the apple slice and, if you like its aroma, the rosemary.

Take a sip before adjusting. Prefer more tartness? Add a few more drops of lemon. Want a lighter drink? Increase the water. Keep the recipe flexible enough to suit your palate.

And please, leave the cocktail shaker alone once the sparkling water joins the party. We want the bubbles in the glass, not all over the countertop.

You can also skip the recipe entirely. A beautiful glass of Saint-Géron alongside dinner is an evening plan all by itself. There’s no requirement to turn every alcohol-free drink into a project with seven ingredients and a decorative smoke cloud.

This Sober October, I’d love for you to explore what makes a drink satisfying to you. Maybe it’s texture. Maybe it’s the bottle’s origin. Maybe it’s the simple pleasure of having something special waiting in the refrigerator.

At Salacious Drinks, we select natural waters from specific sources because those differences deserve a place at the table. Saint-Géron brings a French source story and natural sparkle to that conversation.

Ready to make your next Friday pour a little more interesting? Explore Saint-Géron at Salacious Drinks, and choose a bottle for your own October ritual.

Here’s to a delicious dinner, good company, and a glass you’re excited to raise.
